TAAK presents Summer School Marfa Summer Edition 2015

03 juli 2015 - 05 juli 2015
Thanks to: Mona Garcia and the International Women’s Foundation, Judd Foundation, Hotel Paisano, Chinati Foundation, Marfa Public Radio, Big Bend Sentinel, Marfa Station Border Patrol, Mark Glover, James Benning, Tim Johnson, Hilary DuPont. Coordination: Adam Eeuwens and TAAK

TAAK Summer School Marfa finds twelve young artists and their instructors here for a two-week fieldtrip and fieldwork studio through July 4. These graduate students study at the Sandberg Institute and Cooper Union, New York City. This annual project is organized by Amsterdam-based cultural platform TAAK and this year in close collaboration with instructors from each institution: Krist Gruijthuijsen and Stephan Pascher as well as guest tutor Nathalie Zonnenberg.

TAAK is an international platform that develops innovative art projects and educational programs relating to social issues such as ecology, urbanization, social design and human rights. Summer School Marfa aims to expand contemporary discourse, social practice and politics in art; to create a unique experience and opportunity for emerging artists to gain an understanding of the dynamics and social impact of art in public spaces. By examining the transformation of Marfa, students are engaging in a critical analysis of the value and use of public art using fieldwork methods.

This years program entailed visits to the Judd Foundation and the Chinati Foundation, the Blackwell School and the Marfa Station of the Big Bend Border Patrol Sector, plus a fieldtrip to explore the Texas oil industry near Midland Odessa. The experiences coming from the program will reflect in the presentation of the works by the students that will be organized at Hotel Paisano’s Ballroom and at the corner building 420-430 S. Kelly street and W. Dalles street.

Thursday at 6:30pm an interview with Theo Tegelaers (TAAK), Krist Gruithuijsen and Stephan Pascher Lindsey will be aired by KRTS Marfa Public Radio. Followed by a sound art recording by students.

Opening event: CHECKPOINT TO THE STARS

Friday July 3, 6 – 10 pm: Opening Event, with contributions by all participants, at Hotel Paisano and 420-430 S. Kelly street. A shuttle will run between the two locations. Light refreshments available. Thanks to Jett’s Grill.
